Study: PS3 Will Win the Console War

A study by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service pegs the PlayStation 3 as the ultimate winner of this generation's console war: "Lifetime PS3 sales are predicted to reach 127 million units, compared to 103 million Wii units."

The study, "Taming the Waves: Games Console Life Cycles and Platform Competition," says the Wii is still pretty far out in front with an estimated 76 million Wiis in consumer hands all over the world by the end of 2010. In the long run, however, the study predicts that the Wii will hit its peak in 2011, while the PS3 and Xbox 360 keep going strong for another one to three years.

"Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences, but its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets," Principal Analyst and report author David Mercer said in a press release. "Console industry cycles have given the industry major planning challenges for many years. There are signs that this volatility may be moderating as platforms add home entertainment and social networking services beyond pure gaming."
