So The Martian is either a Comedy or a Musical....

I guess only when the awards are given out that people realised the film The Martian is classified under the Comedy/Musical category in the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.

On first thoughts, either the panel behind the Golden Globe has mistakenly categorised it or there was some major screwups. On searching the news for why it was categorised as such, several things pop up.

Firstly, studio manipulating the film into a category that it has a chance to winning the award, Best Picture (Yay! who cares it is a comedy or musical category?!).

Secondly, other studios have been doing it! The other films in the same category, half are comedies, the other are not! No musicals at all anyway.

The winner and the nominees

The Martian

From wiki

The Martian is a 2015 American science fiction film.
The Big Short is a 2015 American biographical comedy-drama film.
Joy is a 2015 American semi-biographical drama film.
Spy is a 2015 American action spy comedy film.
Trainwreck is a 2015 American romantic comedy film.

Even wiki disagrees that Martian is a comedy and definitely not a musical. The Big Short is about the market collapse. It probably needs a re-categorisating in wiki as well.

So this is a gerrymandering to prevent The Martian from pitting against the eventual Best Motion Picture The Revenant and preventing a loss. Well, every studio wants their films to pick up as much awards as possible and will not hesitate to do it.

Some articles on the categorisation!

Anonymous and you

No, I am not talking about the hacker group Anonymous but the many Anonymous Key Board Warriors in front of the computer screen.

After the hit and run incident, Remy Ong's wiki article was under attack. Tried to clean up thinking it could be just some vandalism but it persists after a while. I requested for semi-protection and seems like some people pulled some strings and a few administrators come along to clean it up.

Once Anonymous could not operate, as registered accounts can be banned and anonymous IPs cannot edit, the article settles down. From the attacks, some are knowledgeable in editing wikis and hiding behind an IP address. Shame on you. Rant on the forums but do not attack a neutral place like Wikipedia. Due to the name-callings, lots of change history was redacted.

Poly vs JC for entry to local Universities

A great comment on the Poly vs JC on entry to local Universities.

Credits to the poster and this is a very good piece, a big wake up call to all.

Polytechnic graduates cannot have it both ways, do they want a Diploma or a Degree? If the latter, they need to know that the government needs to spend more money to train a polytechnic graduate than a JC student, as the former graduates with a vocational skill, but the latter does not. So they cannot expect a second bite of the cherry at the same priority level for university admission of JC students who finish their JC studies with nothing other than a GCE "A" Level Certificate.

Polytechnics pride their training as being more "hands on". JC prepares a student with more in-depth grounding in the core subjects to prepare them for university. For JC students, university is and has always been their final destination from the point they decided to take the JC route. For polytechnic students, their endpoint (at least in Singapore) should be getting their Diploma. If they want to go beyond that in Singapore, they should choose the JC route. If they could not qualify for the JC route, it is not the government's fault. They only have themselves to blame. However, nothing is to stop them from pursuing their dreams overseas, but they cannot expect to be given greater access to the local universities on the ground of it being more costly for them to go overseas.

A place at a good local university is a limited resource and like all limited resources, they should go to the most deserving, in this case, those who have qualified for JC and who have consciously decided to take the JC path to prepare themselves for a university education and not a Diploma. In the past JC education was called "Pre-University" education, and it is precisely that.

So it is time that Polytechnic graduates own up to and accept the implications of their own decisions made when they were at the cross-roads of choosing between polytechnic and JC education, and not continually gripe about this alleged "unfairness" of the system to them.

CIMB credit card

Just received my CIMB credit card on thurs. Simple and no frill designed platinum master card.
It comes with a 0.5% cash rebate on bill on purchases in Singapore and 1% for purchases in Malaysia. Then again for Malaysia purchases, it better has a good exchange rate else 1% off may not be even useful.

As I was on the website, I also checked out their saving rates and it is a big 1% daily accrued interest for a regular > $500 SGD topup or 0.5% if u fail to do so. This is so much better even if u dun have a regular transfer of > $500.
Daily interest rate will help to motivate to transfer available monies to earn that bit more.

Some feng shui help for gambling

>With the Sentosa IR up, I am sure there will be those who are seeking help in gambling thru various means like Feng Shui.

Below are just some general Feng Shui tips.

Some feng shui help for gamblingRandom luck which doesn't depend on us plays a main role in gambling, but we still can do some things in order to attract good luck to us. Feng shui gives us some very helpful guidelines which we surely should take into account at the time of gambling and wishing to increase our good luck.

According to feng shui principles, the place or spot you choose for playing a game can have a huge influence in the game outcome. Chi, or positive energy, flows with more intensity in some places than it does in others and these spots where chi influence is bigger can be of strategic importance for a gambler's good luck.

Any gambler wishing to follow feng shui guidelines should find out which spots are the most attractive for chi and choose that spot for standing or sitting during the game. This would allow positive energy brought by chi to positively influence his luck helping him to win.

The same guidelines should be followed by online gamblers. In these cases, they should pay attention to the spot where their computers are. A gambler who plays through his computer should pick up a place in his house where chi flows freely in order to allow it helping him winning. Besides, you should also consider that computers manage an important amount of energy, and therefore, by placing them at a positive spot you would be highly increasing your positive energy and attracting good luck.

One ideal spot for attracting good luck is in the room's west side. This is a point particularly good for any gambling and money related matters. No matter in what room you are, if elements are balanced and chi flows freely, you could highly help your good luck by choosing that part of the room for your gambling.

Another important feng shui tip that any gambler should have into account is that they should not be next to a window or a door. These are places where chi tends to become disperse and leave the room, and that wouldn't be helpful for the gambler's good luck. On the other hand, being in a position such that allows the gambler to see the door can be helpful for a positive game outcome.

Charles Schultz Philosophy

You don't actually have to take the quiz. Just read the email
straight through, and you'll get the point, an awesome one, that it
is trying to make.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.

4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.

5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and
actress.

6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday.
These are no second-rate achievers.
They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies.
Awards tarnish.
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult
time.

3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated.

5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

6. Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.

Easier?

The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are NOT the ones with
the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards!
They are the ones that care.

Don't worry about the world coming to an end today.
It's already tomorrow in Australia.
